Rail services commence at Belfast Grand Central Station

Rail services from the new Belfast Grand Central Station commenced last month, marking a significant milestone for Northern Ireland’s transport network and the wider Dublin-Belfast Economic Corridor. This launch follows the successful reintroduction of bus and coach services in September, reinforcing Belfast Grand Central’s status as a critical transport hub on the island of Ireland.

As the largest integrated transport hub on the island of Ireland, Belfast Grand Central Station boasts eight rail platforms and twenty-six bus stands, with the capacity to accommodate up to 20 million passengers annually. This extensive infrastructure ensures smooth connections across bus, coach, and rail services, making it easier than ever to explore the region and access Ireland’s wider transport network.

A key development at the enhanced transport facility is the introduction of the new Enterprise timetable, which took effect on Tuesday, 29th October. This upgrade significantly enhances connectivity, with 30 daily services running between Belfast and Dublin from Monday to Saturday, and 16 services on Sundays.

This expanded hourly service offers substantial benefits to communities, businesses, and travellers on both sides of the border, providing faster, more efficient, and sustainable travel options. By encouraging greater use of public transport, Grand Central Station highlights Northern Ireland’s commitment to promoting environmentally friendly travel and significantly strengthens the economic ties between Dublin and Belfast.

Chris Conway, Translink Group Chief Executive, noted the impact of the new services:

“The flagship Enterprise service is key to driving economic development along the Belfast-Dublin corridor, strengthening connections for both business and leisure travellers. With the new Belfast Grand Central Station now operational, passengers will benefit from a world-class facility designed for smooth, efficient travel and a more sustainable experience.

“Together with Iarnród Éireann, we are committed to further developing the Enterprise service, with new fleet procurement underway . We are already seeing strong passenger growth, with more people choosing this cleaner, greener travel option for cross-border journeys.”

In addition, the X1 express Goldliner service will continue to operate from Belfast Grand Central Station as normal, providing a convenient option for travellers making the journey from Belfast to Dublin Airport or further into the city by bus.

Looking ahead, the full development of the station – including public realm upgrades as part of the Weavers Cross urban regeneration scheme – is expected to be completed by 2025.
